Why Condom?

I believe condom is not only good in it self as a technical tools to avoid STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) but it also a good tool to transform gender equity in to action in the most intimate way. It will help the girl/women to build her negotiating power and ability and its also help the boy/man to learn to be responsible for his action by taking prevention act. Its just one of the best tool that we can have for now and I am glad we have condom.

But some times there are fizzy article which says, condom has no use for HIV prevention because the pore is bigger then virus size, some people says introducing condom to teenagers is a two sided blade, it introduce earlier sexual debut etc there is even more black campaign about condom use. I just want to clears some fact Is condom effective in preventing HIV?????

Laboratory studies show that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of HIV and other STI pathogens. Studies show that polyurethane condoms also provide effective barriers against sperm, bacteria, and viruses such as HIV. Several studies clearly show that condom breakage rates are less than two percent. Most of the breakage and slippage is likely due to incorrect use rather than to the condoms' quality. In a two-year study of sero-discordant couples (in which one partner was HIV-positive and one was HIV-negative), no uninfected partner became infected among couples using condoms correctly and consistently at every act of vaginal or anal sex versus 10 percent of those using condoms inconsistently.

A recent study of declining HIV prevalence in Uganda found no evidence that abstinence or monogamy had contributed to the decline. Findings identified the increased use of condoms in casual relationships as important in Uganda's declining HIV infection rates. Is condom induces early sexual debut?Despite the obvious proven fact of condom's effectiveness, the republican elite in USA (including right wing Christians) still think that abstinences is the only solution (so beware if your internet sources has anything to do with this republican campaign, be critical. Bulk of money going for this campaign from Bush pocket). The influence on the Bush administration of Christian and right-wing organisations - who argue that condom-based prevention programmes encourage earlier and more frequent sexual activity - has led in recent years to a rapid increase in abstinence-only-based HIV prevention around the world.

The researchers found trough metaanalysis study that interventions which provided condoms to study participants had no effect on the number of sexual partners, the total number of times participants had sex, and on whether participants who were previously abstinent became sexually active (p > 0.20 for all three). This suggests, "that teaching individuals about condoms does not result in more acts of intercourse, more sexual partners, or earlier intercourse." Condoms alongside information, motivation and skills training may work best Researchers say that overall they found that interventions that included information, motivation and skills training worked better than interventions that only included some of these components.(condom only or abstinence only etc)

They conclude by arguing that "although condom use has been touted as the primary and most beneficial sexual risk reduction outcome", an approach which combines condom use with "key elements of behavioral theory" may be most successful at reducing sexual frequency and number of partners.
